My name is Robbie Shaw, I earned a B.A. in Psychology and a M.Ed. in Counselling Pyschology from the University of Lethbridge. During my undergraduate degree, I studied broadly in the areas of neuroscience, psychology, religion, and sociology. I also completed independent research on the well-being of elite youth athletes. During my graduate degree, I focused on counselling assessment, theory, and skills. I also completed a Master's thesis entitled: "What's the Mindset? An Investigation of Junior Hockey Players' Attitudes toward Sport Psychology."
I offer counselling that is person-centered and ground in a core belief that every person has the capacity for meaningful change, growth, and healing. My intention is to empower clients to make meaning of their past, to cultivate personal insight, and to develop the strength and strategies to overcome life's challenges. I utilize a combination of therpeuatic modalities including but not limited to CBT, solution-focused. strengths-based, and mindfulness. I strive to create an environment conducive to change by using evidence-based practices that best suit the specific needs and distinct worldview of the client. My counselling style is eclectic and is the culmination of years of study, a refined theortretical framework, personal growth, and a genuine desire to help.
I have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds including individuals in addiction recovery, in a corrections facility, and recovering from significant workplace injuries. I also have extensive experience in sport as a player, instructor, coach, and sport psychology consultant; this experience helps me provide counselling for athletes with sport and non-sport issues.
