Since 1992, I have been working with adolescents in secondary schools in BC. After completing my M.A. in Counselling Psychology, I’ve specifically helped youth with a range of challenges, including family struggles, distressing peer relationships, exploring gender and sexuality, substance use, and eating disorders. However, my academic specialization and the focus of my clinical work has been in giving youth the skills and strategies to overcome anxiety and depression.
My work is strengths-based and I believe in a family systems model, which provides an understanding of an individual within their family structure. Because Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) are the most effective modalities in the treatment of anxiety and depression, I have specialized in those approaches. However, over fifty year of research shows that it is not the type of therapy that provides the growth and healing as much as how much the client is ready for therapy and the trust that they have in the therapeutic relationship.
My therapeutic work is also trauma-informed. Often, people are uneducated about how deeply ingrained and damaging the effects of trauma, especially early trauma can be on an individual. A person's whole personality structure changes if they have experienced abuse, addiction or have been exposed to behaviour or situations that have been tramautic. The process for recovering from trauma can take months or even years, but healing from abuse/trauma/addiction is an honorable path.
At any stage in life, investing in doing the emotional work to understand the self is worthwhile; I encourage my clients to lead an examined life. To live without reflection and self-growth is to live being emotionally reactive, but taking the time to reflect on choices and actions creates deeper meaning and is a sign of developing emotional and mental health.
The goal in doing the emotional work to reach a high level of self awareness which allows you to pull yourself out of blame, guilt and anger in order to live with emotional balance and a deeper understanding of yourself and others. This allows you to live with more openness, more love and more calmness.
My work hours are primarily week nights and weekends and I provide both face-to-face, on-line and telephone access so that clients can contact me in whatever way they feel comfortable.
